A Rhine Valley Cruise for a Day
Scheduled boats through the gorge — a taster, or an extra day around your river cruise.

A Rhine Valley Cruise by Day Boat
Several companies run scheduled passenger boats on the Middle Rhine. The best known is KD (Köln-Düsseldorfer), whose timetable links towns such as Mainz, Bingen, Rüdesheim, St. Goar, Boppard and Koblenz, with shorter round trips to the Loreley and castle-themed sailings. You can ride a section of the gorge, step off in a town, explore, and catch a later boat or a train back. It is a flexible way to see the valley at your own pace.

Good starting points
- Rüdesheim or Bingen — at the upstream end, with the castles straight ahead.
- St. Goar or St. Goarshausen — for the Loreley and Burg Rheinfels.
- Boppard — on its great river loop, with a chairlift to the viewpoint above.
- Koblenz — at the downstream end, where the Moselle joins.
From Frankfurt, Mainz or Cologne
Many visitors start from a big city. From Frankfurt, regional trains follow the Rhine to Rüdesheim and Bingen; from Mainz and Wiesbaden it is a short hop. Cologne and Bonn lie downstream of Koblenz, so a day trip from there usually means a train south first. Railways run along both banks of the gorge, so you can boat one way and ride back. For maps, hiking trails such as the Rheinsteig and town information, the Romantic Rhine tourist board is the official source.
Boat one way, train back
The simplest plan. Downstream boats are faster, so many people sail toward Koblenz and return by rail.
Stay a night
A night in Bacharach, Oberwesel or St. Goar lets you see the valley at dusk, after the day boats have gone.
Add the Moselle
From Koblenz, the Moselle valley and Cochem are close by rail.
Before your river cruise
If your cruise starts or ends in Frankfurt, Mainz or Koblenz, a day on the gorge makes a fine extra day.
Day Boat or River Cruise?
A day boat shows you the gorge; a river cruise lets you live with it. On a multi-day Rhine cruise you sail the valley with commentary, sleep aboard, and wake up in a different town without packing. On a day boat you choose exactly where to stop and how long to stay. Many travelers do both: a day on the gorge on their own to decide whether they love it, and a full river cruise later. Rhine Valley Cruise Questions
Can I do a Rhine valley cruise from Frankfurt?
Yes, as a day trip. Regional trains run from Frankfurt to Rüdesheim, Bingen and other towns at the start of the gorge, where scheduled boats leave in season. Some operators also sell combined boat-and-rail tickets.
Do scheduled Rhine boats run all year?
The main timetable runs in the warmer months, with a reduced winter schedule on part of the Middle Rhine. Check the operator’s current timetable before you travel.
